HIV infections rise dramatically

RIGA - HIV infections have exploded in Latvia, with nearly seven times as many diagnoses of the disease made this year as in 1997.There were 131 new cases of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, registered with the AIDS Prevention Center as of Nov. 20.At the same time last year, only 21 new cases of HIV had been diagnosed."The total number of people infected may not seem high, but the rate of increase is alarming," said Andris Ferdats, director of the AIDS Prevention Center.There are 219 HIV infected people in Latvia, which is more than in Estonia and Lithuania combined.Since 1996, the number o...
