EU member countries cool on expansion

RIGA - Declining interest in eastern expansion among European Union member states may explain why no nation was invited to join the negotiating table this week.The European Commission, in its annual progress reports on candidate countries, said talks with Latvia could start by the end of 1999. No date was given for talks with Lithuania. Accession talks with Estonia are already underway.Latvia had hoped at least one country would be invited to join the accession negotiations.
