Russian radar base to shut down on schedule

RIGA - Despite press reports and various rumours that agreement with Russia on use of the Skrunda radar could be extended, the radar will halt operation on Aug. 31, Latvian Foreign Minister Valdis Birkavs told a news conference July 29. Birkavs said his conviction was grounded in the fact that a tender on dismantling the radar, organized by Russia, has been completed, and one Latvian firm has emerged as winner.
