RIGA (LETA) - Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga and pop-rock band's Brainstorm lead singer Renars Kaupers are vying for the European Man/Woman of 2000 title.

Rolands Rikars, a member of the European Movement in Latvia, told a press conference Nov. 10 that about 50 people have cast votes for their "European Man/Woman of 2000" so far, and the current figures show that the president and Kaupers are ahead.

People whose work and ideas in the past year have contributed the most to Latvia's move toward the European Union may contend for the title.

The final decision on who is to receive the award is adopted by the European Movement's board, which selects a candidate from a list created by visitors to the movement's Internet home page home.parks.lv/ekl.

Brainstorm began its concert tour in Germany on Nov. 13 in Hamburg as the opening act for Fool's Garden.
