Latvia's unemployment hits six figures

RIGA – Latvia's unemployment rate has broken the 100,000 mark, with about 6,000 laid off at machine works and other companies losing lucrative sources of sales in Russia.Nov. 1 figures from the state Welfare Ministry show that even Riga's jobless rate, usually low, has increased, from 3.5 percent to 4.1 percent with the addition of 659 unemployed workers to the registry. Even the economically well-off port city of Ventspils had 239 unemployed in October. Numbers from the Central Statistics Department show an additional 10,400 laid off "temporarily" for three months, or people without wages ...
