The local government elections which took place weekend before last showed above all that voters prefer stability, whether real or perceived, to change. In many local governments, the incumbents were handily re-elected, and in some cases that causes reason for concern.Thus, for instance, the good folk of Ventspils once again re-elected their absurdly compromised mayor, Aivars Lembergs, despite the fact that the man is going to spend much of the next few years in court, where he is being tried on charges of money laundering, bribery, misuse of office and other various misdeeds.
