British drug smuggler seized

TALLINN - A British citizen was caught last week in the Tallinn passenger harbor trying to leave Estonia with 20 kilograms of drugs hidden in his car's fuel tank, a record drug seizure in Estonia.

William Hain had a special hidden compartment in his brand new Vauxhall Omega's fuel tank, where he had 20 kilograms of Afghanistan opium, the raw material for heroine.

Forty-two-year-old Hain was apprehended along with another unidentified person, allegedly his Estonian accomplice, according to a security police spokesman. Both men faced charges for drug smuggling in Tallinn City Court and will spend up to eight years in jail if convicted. The arrest culminated a month-long investigation involving the Scottish Drug Enforcement Agency, Estonian Customs agents and the security police.The arrest is a major seizure for Estonian police.

The drugs have a street value of 10 million to 20 million kroons ($550,000 to $1.1 million).
