RIGA (BNS) - A book telling the story of a Portuguese diplomat in Bordeaux who saved 30,000 people, including Latvians from Riga, from Nazi gas chambers has been published in France, according to The Times of London.The book came out 45 years after the wartime hero, Aristides de Sousa Mendes died a pauper in Portugal.As the Portuguese consul general in Bordeaux in 1940, he single-handedly saved an estimated 30,000 people including Jews, stateless persons and others considered undesirable by the Nazis by issuing them visas to Portugal in direct defiance of his orders.It was, in the words of ...
