LATVIA COULD OVERTAKE ESTONIA IN EU STAKES: Latvia failed to receive an invitation to early talks on European Union (EU) accession last year, but one Estonian newspaper has reported that it may overtake Estonia in terms of EU readiness. Eesti Paevaleht reported in its Oct. 9 edition that the European Commission's (EC) Department for the Baltics and Poland is about to issue a report that identifies Latvia as the most successful nation of the Baltic region in recent years.
