RIGA - The referendum on granting state language status to Russian will take place on Feb. 18, the Central Election Commission (CEC) has decided, reports LETA. CEC Chairman Arnis Cimdars proposed organizing the referendum on this day to ensure “enough time to prepare voting stations abroad.”It was during an emergency session on Dec. 22 that Saeima turned down Constitutional amendments which would have granted state language status to Russian.From Nov. 1 to 31, a total of 187,378 voters signed the petition for staging a referendum on granting the status of a state lang...
