Drunk driving by public officials is unacceptable and reprehensible - president

RIGA - Drunk driving by public officials is unacceptable and reprehensible, President Edgars Rinkevics stated on Facebook.

"Driving while intoxicated is dangerous and a criminal act, and under certain circumstances, it is subject to criminal liability. It is particularly unacceptable and reprehensible when committed by public officials - ministers, members of parliament, or law enforcement officers," the president stated.

In his view, such behavior deserves a severe punishment, as no one is above the law, and this also sends a signal to society as a whole.

The President also noted that drunk driving and swimming under the influence are far too common in the society, and this is why tragedies occur.

He also thanked the police officers for stopping the drunk driver and, possibly, preventing a major disaster.

"I hope that every such incident will make someone think twice and not do anything foolish, and that people will step in in time to stop these ‘heroes’ from driving off in a car, on a motorcycle, or on a bicycle," said the President.

As reported, Welfare Minister Reinis Uzulnieks (Greens/Farmers) was caught driving on Saturday with alcohol level of 3.09 per mille.

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (AS) has issued an order relieving Uzulnieks of his duties as Minister of Welfare. Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture Uldis Augulis (Greens/Farmers) has been appointed acting Minister of Welfare for the remaining term of this government.
