Naval exercise aimed at pushing Balts toward NATO

TALLINN - It was smooth sailing for sailors who took part in a multinational exercise to look for mines in the Baltic Sea, though it is too soon to say the same about whether the exercise will improve the Baltics chances of joining NATO. More than 800 sailors from 12 countries took part in the multinational exercises, called Open Spirit that began on Sept. 15 and ended Sept. 22. The mission was hailed as a success by the Estonian military.
