RIGA - Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony Center) has been in rehabilitation in Berlin where he has been recovering after his ill-fated participation in this year’s Nordea Riga Marathon’s half-marathon (21km) event. Well into the race, the mayor took ill, succumbing to severe heat stroke and oxygen deficiency, reports news agency LETA.

Due to the severity of his condition, Usakovs was flown for treatment to Germany.

With his condition improving, the mayor said on June 22 that he “would like to thank all those who have helped me. Without this help, I would not be able to speak about future plans and my return to Riga.”

On June 21, Usakovs gave an interview to the LNT television channel. This was his first interview since treatment at Charite Clinic in Berlin. He explained that his health situation improved since rehabilitation started.
The mayor’s liver function has stabilized and his kidney function improved. However, Usakovs lost ten kilograms during the treatment. In intensive care, the mayor was connected to an artificial kidney.

Usakovs said that, even though he still remains at the clinic in Berlin, he continues to follow events in Latvia and Riga City Council. The mayor is ready to return to Latvia as soon as possible and resume fulfilling his duties.
The mayor could return to his duties in July.
