VILNIUS -- The mayor of Vilnius, Arturas Zuokas, was hospitalized with heart problems on Tuesday.

Zuokas, 43, was admitted to the intensive care unit of Santariskes hospital on May 24 while feeling ill. He was released Wednesday morning after being cleared by doctors.

Zuokas’s wife and member of parliament Agne Zuokiene had said previously that it was a case of poisoning, but that it was still unclear whether it was a case of food poisoning or something else.

Though this initially appeared to be the case, testing later revealed that the mayor's heart problems had not been caused by poison.

Zuokas, the former leader of the Liberal and Centre Union, returned to the post of mayor -- a position he also held from 2000-2007 -- following a 2008 bribery conviction.

The news comes as Riga City Mayor Nils Usakovs, 34, is transferred to a hospital in Germany after suffering from complications arising from a heat stroke he suffered while competing in the city's marathon Sunday.
