Farmers want year classified as disaster

TALLINN - Farmers have called on the government to declare 1998 a disaster after having suffered heavy losses as a result of bad weather. Rain and storms have hit the farming industry hard, causing an estimated 6.3 million kroons ($450,000) worth of losses to cooperatives, individuals and local governments. Farmers are already struggling to compete with foreign importers and subsidized goods as they work with old machines and have no money to renovate or reinvest in new technology.
