Estonia mourns long-serving diplomat

TALLINN - Legendary diplomat Ernst Jaakson, who began working in the Estonian foreign service during the birth of the country in 1919 and lived to witness its rebirth in 1991, died Sept. 4. He was 93.Jaakson went to work at the Estonian Embassy in Riga at the age of 14, delivering messages and reading Latvian newspapers. During his 79 years of service, the messages Jaakson delivered became much more important and the newspapers he read described a world torn apart by a second world war and a longer cold war that separated him from the country he served.
