Six die in Latvia fires

Three fires around Latvia took a total of six lives on Tuesday.

RIGA - A total of six people have died in a slew of fires that swept through Latvia yesterday.

The deadliest fire took place in the Latgallian town of Livani, where three people were killed in a blaze that broke out in an apartment complex.

National news agency LETA reported that the fire began on the second floor of an apartment complex on Smilsu street. It quickly spread, covering about 40 square meters in total. Firefighters received the call at about 8:45 pm.

Members of the fire and rescue service were able to save five people from the fire. The identities of the three people who were killed have not yet been released.

Two more people were killed in a fire that started around lunchtime on Vecmilgravja 1.linija in Riga, LETA reported. The fire took place in a 5-story apartment complex.

Also on Tuesday night, one person was killed in a house fire in the countryside district of Viksnas.

The fires come just days after a tragic blaze at an orphanage in Estonia left 10 children dead.
