Public prosecutor arrested for bribery

RIGA - A public prosecutor has been arrested in Riga for allegedly accepting a bribe from another prosecutor.

National news agency LETA reported that it is possible that the detained prosecutor is Riga Northern District Prosecutor Svens Martinsons.

LETA reported that an investigation by the corruption combatting and prevention bureau, KNAB, found a prosecutor had attempted to pass a 2,000 euro bribe on to another prosecutor. The corruption watchdog did not reveal the names of those involved.

A total of four people are suspected of taking part in the bribe, including the giver, receiver and two go-betweens. The prosecutor's office is cooperating with the corruption bureau on the case.

LETA reported that Martinsons had debts totalling 130,000 euros.
