RIGA - The Turkish consortium TAV Havalimanlari Holding (TAV) is still prepared to participate in the development of Riga International Airport, reports Nozare.lv. TAV Business Development Director Guclu Batkin stresses that his company is maximally interested in the development of the airport, and although not officially involved in talks over the construction of a new terminal, is participating as more than just a bystander.
Batkin indicates that TAV is also prepared to make a financial contribution to the construction of the terminal, which could cost around 90 million euros; however, further progress of the project is dependent on the talks currently underway between the government and airBaltic.
“We hope to be chosen as the builders of the new terminal, and we are maximally interested in the development of this project,” said Batkin, adding that the consortium’s interest in the project was strengthened by the deal concluded by its subsidiary HAVAS Ground Handling Services Co. (HAVAS), whereby it acquired 50 percent of the airport services company North Hub Services, provider of ground handling services at Riga airport.
Both TAV and HAVAS see Riga’s airport as a location with good business prospects, given that even during the recession the airport has continued to grow and increase its passenger numbers.
Latvian national airline airBaltic plans to construct a new passenger terminal, which would cost approximately 90 million euros and be completed by 2013, the airline’s president Bertolt Flick has previously said.
Flick has publicly expressed his frustration at the lack of results from talks with the government, indicating that the airline could consider expansion options in other countries if the planned new terminal is delayed any further.
