Citizenship shapes up as election issue

RIGA - The voters of Latvia will have their say on controversial citizenship law changes after the referendum signature drive was successfully concluded Aug. 18. The campaign was initiated by 36 MPs after parliamentary amendments on June 22 abolished the "window" system for naturalization and language tests for children of non-citizens born after 1991.Provisional results from the Central Election Committee (CEC) indicate that 223,999 people agreed that changes to the law adopted by the parliament on June 22 should be voted on by the people.Just a week before the end of the month-long proce...
