Five perish in tragic fire

One of those killed in the rural fire was a four-year-old child.

LUDZÅ -- The Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service has said that five people were killed in a devastating blaze that took place on April 20.

One of those that perished in the blaze, which took place on a farm near Ludza in South-Eastern Latvia, was a four-year-old child.

Firefighters were called to the scene at about 11 p.m. after receiving a call from neighbors, national news agency LETA reported. The neighbors were alerted to the fire after their electricity cut out.

The fire was not totally put out until about 2 a.m., LETA reported.

One man lived alone in the house. When the fire broke out, he was hosting two guests from Russia along with a mother and young child.

The severity of the fire has made it so far impossible to identify the victims, the fire rescue service said. Police have not been able to determine the cause of the blaze.
