MERI SIGNS PENSION INSURANCE BILL: Estonian President Lennart Meri signed the pension insurance bill into law July 9 despite protests from several Estonian parties. The parliament approved the pension insurance law on June 26 as the first part of the three-pillar pension reform Estonia is about to adopt. The law determines what a state pension is, what its different forms are and the basis for compiling a state pension insurance budget. The law will come into force on Jan. 1, 2000.
