More money for moms, more babies for Latvia

RIGA –The government began putting more money in the pockets of new mothers last week in an attempt to halt the decline in the country's population.As of July 1, mothers of babies up to a 18 months old saw their child care allowance rise from 12 to 30 lats ($19 to $48) a month. This sum is paid to mothers who care for their children at home and have neither full nor part-time jobs.
