Latvian culture minister ready to resign over National Opera's debts

RIGA – The Latvian government has chosen to keep the Latvian National Opera in business and the Culture Minister in her job.Finance Minister Edmunds Krastins announced on Nov. 23 that his draft 2000 budget includes 330,000 lats for the debt-ridden institution.That number was slightly less than the LNO had asked for to pay off the most pressing of its 2 million lats ($3.44million) of debt. But it was enough for Culture Minister Karina Petersone, who put public pressure on the government by telling reporters that she would resign rather than announce that the opera would shut its doors."Basic...
