Court sentences commander to prison

TALLINN (BNS) – An Estonian court on June 28 handed down a prison sentence of 4.5 years to Jaanus Karm, the commander of a reconnaissance unit whose 14 subordinates died after straying from course while crossing a water barrier off Estonia's northern coast in 1997. Karm, who was among the eight survivors of the 22-man unit which embarked on the crossing, was sentenced to four years and six months of detention in a semi-closed prison.
