Finland to push for EU enlargement

TURKU, Finland (BNS) – Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen said that Finland would use its first ever presidency of the European Union to speed up the process of taking in new member countries, the AFP agency reported."We're going to apply the accelerator on enlargement," he said, adding that a report on new members by the European Commission is due in October and decisions can be expected at the Helsinki summit in December."On the basis of the Commission's report, the European Council could decide in December to open discussions with at least five new countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Bulg...
