Ex-NKVD officer gets four years in prison

PARNU - A former NKVD official has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in the mass deportation of Estonians to Siberia in 1949. The Parnu County Court convicted Mikhail Neverovski, 79, of Parnu, of collecting information on 279 people when the deportations were being prepared and personally rounding up three families. The verdict was greeted with a sigh of relief by many of the victims, who had crowded into the small seaside town courtroom.
