Soviet hero goes on trial

RIGA - The Soviet Union called Vasily Kononov a hero, but last week a Riga regional court began hearing the case against him for the murder of nine civilians.The former communist "Red Partisan" leader, 76, has been in jail since last summer, held in connection with the same nine deaths in a Latgalian village in the summer of 1944 that won him Soviet medals.Prosecutors say that Kononov and his men attacked, tortured and killed civilians in the village of Mazie Bati, and that Kononov, who was himself from the region, personally shot a local blacksmith, his father's acquaintance.Kononov's lawy...
