Sigulda: international luge town in 2003

SIGULDA - A dozen years after war postponed Latvia's day in the sun in sporting events, tiny Sigulda has won a bid to host the International Luge Federation's competition in 2003.Sigulda was set to receive bobsled competitors in 1991, but gunfire in Riga and Latvians barricading their government building from Soviet troops a week before bobsleds were to whoosh down the track canceled the meet. Earlier this summer, Latvia won its bid at the ILF annual meeting in Salzburg to get another chance to hold the meet in Sigulda in January 2003.
