Minister urges reforms in citizenship administration

RIGA (BNS) - Latvian Justice Minister Valdis Birkavs says he supports merging the Naturalization Affairs Administration and the Citizenship and Migration Affairs Administration.The move, which he presented Sept. 8 to the Parliament's committee for human rights and public affairs, would have the one, larger institution in charge of all citizenship-related issues.The merger would free up the Interior Ministry to deal only with immigration issues.Some lawmakers doubted whether it would be appropriate to have a single administration for citizenship and ethnic affairs, but Birkavs explained that...
