Meri: relations with Russia will improve

TALLINN (BNS) - President Lennart Meri said he expects relations between Estonia and Russia to improve even as the Baltic country continues its attempts to join NATO over Russia's objections.Speaking before the Estonian Parliament Sept. 13, Meri said, "I am convinced that our steadfastness in itself is a sign of stability and that this may bring about a positive turn in Estonian-Russian relations and help Russia shed its distrust of our foreign policy course."But Meri offered no apologies for Estonia's NATO ambitions, pointing to the country's traumatic history in the 20th century."Estonia ...
