President wants more for defense

RIGA (BNS) - After a meeting with Latvia's ambassador to NATO, President Vaira Vike-Freiberga said the country should promise to boost defense spending to 2 percent of GDP by the year 2003.The move, Vike-Freiberga said, is important to ensure that Latvia is capable of reaching the unofficial NATO minimum level of defense spending so that the alliance realizes the country is serious about membership and capable of fulfilling its obligations.Vike-Freiberga believes that by sending its own peace-keeping unit to Kosovo, Latvia has started proving its readiness to cooperate with NATO member stat...
