Greens gather to call for cleaner sea

RIGA - Environmentalists got all the evidence they needed in asking for steps toward a cleaner Baltic Sea when oil washed ashore near the port city of Vents-pils Sept. 5, the day when hundreds of residents gathered seaside to offer praise and call for cleaner waters.A 600-meter swath of oil was found drifting four to five meters offshore, according to Environmental Protection Club President Girts Strazdins.The report was later confirmed by the Latvian fire and rescue department and cleaned up, according to the Baltic News Service.
