VILNIUS - Navteq, a U.S. digital map and geoinformation system developer, announced that it has begun selling digital maps of the Baltic states.

The maps detail approximately 6,823 kilometers of roads in the region, as well as major hotels, gas stations, catering and other establishments, the company said.

They were put on sale in the latest set of the company's digital maps.

Lithuania's maps include information about specific streets in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipeda, Siauliai and Panevezys, as well as the data on major highways. The aggregate length of roads on the country's digital maps totals some 1,958 kilometers.

On top of this, the combined length of roads on Latvia's digital maps, which also contain information on major cities, amounts to some 2,603 kilometers.

Estonia's digital maps include the data on some 2,262 kilometers of roads and the cities of Tallinn, Tartu, Narva and Parnu.

Meanwhile, experts have repeatedly highlighted a shortage of digital maps designated for wireless devices, vehicle navigation systems and other installations.

Navteq has included data on ferry routes that depar from the seaports of the Baltic countries on the new maps.

Navteq, established in 1985 and headquartered in Chicago, employs a workforce of about 1,500 and operates offices in 20 countries.
