Latvia to dismantle nuclear reactor

RIGA (BNS) - The Latvian government has decided that the Salaspils nuclear reactor be dismantled, and that dismantling works must get under way in 2001, Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Vents Balodis told a news conference Oct. 26. Last week the government endorsed the concept of liquidating the reactor located in Salaspils, a suburb 20 kilometers north from Riga. It envisages dismantling the reactor in nine years at a cost of around 12 million lats ($21 million).
