Railway, mechanics reach a compromise

TALLINN 's Eesti Raudtee (Estonian Railway) struck a deal with striking engineers late Tuesday according to which train drivers will receive a 10 percent pay raise.

According to the agreement, transit trains drivers will receive a 10 percent raise to 42.75 kroons (2.73 euros) per hour and other drivers 38.50 kroons.

Train drivers went on strike on Sept. 23 after failing to reach an agreement with Estonian Railway management, threatening to bring cargo traffic to a halt. They had demanded an 11 percent raise 's down from 15 percent earlier this year 's but the company was only willing to offer 9 percent.

The company raised train drivers' wages by 6 percent in the spring.

Estonian Railway spokesman Priit Koff said the parties would make details of the agreement public on Wednesday.
