VILNIUS - Lithuania is working to arrange a meeting between the Lithuanian and US presidents, a presidential aide said on Tuesday.
"Yes. Yes, of course," Asta Skaisgiryte, chief foreign policy aide to President Gitanas Nauseda, told Ziniu Radijas when asked whether efforts were underway to organise such a meeting.
"Naturally, the president will meet with President Trump once a certain range of issues has matured," she added.
However, Skaisgiryte noted that such a meeting requires preparation: “We must have, for example, something to bring to Washington, something to offer.”
"We understand that this US administration is very pragmatic, very result-oriented, and focused on specifics," Skaisgiryte added.
According to her, potential topics include a possible agreement with the US on critical minerals and Lithuanian assistance in ensuring the protection of the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East, a vital artery for oil trade.
The news portal Delfi reported last week that Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene has also instructed Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys to organise a meeting with US President Donald Trump, or, failing that, with US Vice President JD Vance.
Skaisgiryte said she saw no institutional competition in these efforts.
"The Prime Minister, of course, could also travel to the United States to meet, for example, with Vice President JD Vance," Skaisgiryte added.
