MT Group, a leading European energy infrastructure development company, and Amber Grid, the Lithuanian gas transmission system operator, have signed a major EPC Contract for the reconstruction of the Elektrėnai Gas Distribution Station. This project represents a significant step towards ensuring a stable and reliable gas supply to Lithuania’s 455 MW Reserve Power Plant.
“We are proud of MT Group’s significant contribution to the development of Lithuania’s energy infrastructure and the successful projects we have implemented so far, which directly contribute to strengthening the country’s energy independence and security. Continuing our long-term collaboration with Amber Grid, we are launching another vital project for Lithuania – the reconstruction of the Elektrėnai Gas Distribution Station. This station is one of the key links in Lithuania’s energy security, ensuring a reliable gas supply to the critical 9th unit of the Reserve Power Plant. The reconstruction will not only improve the efficiency of the station but will also substantially enhance the country’s overall energy security,” said Kristina Norvaišienė, Executive Director of MT Group.
Under the contract, MT Group will carry out the entire design preparation and reconstruction process – from the development of engineering solutions and receipt of construction permit, to the supply of long lead equipment and execution of construction works. The project will include the modernization of the gas reduction and metering system, reconstruction of main gas pipeline and distribution pipeline, significant upgrades to the electrical system, and the installation of technological alarms, lightning protection, automation control, telemetry, and up-to-date safety systems. Additionally, it will involve system testing, commissioning, and the handover of the facility to the State Commission.
The Elektrėnai Gas Distribution Station supplies gas to the 455-megawatt Combined Cycle Unit (CCU) of the Reserve Power Plant, also known as Unit 9. This unit, the most efficient and modern in the Elektrėnai complex, is used not only for standby purposes but also for commercial power generation. The station performs crucial technological control functions, contributing to Lithuania’s energy security and stability, while also supplying natural gas to consumers in the Elektrėnai municipality.
“The Elektrėnai Gas Distribution Station is a strategically important facility that ensures Lithuania’s energy security during critical situations. According to the Minister of Energy’s directive, the station is subject to the highest security requirements. Preparatory works are currently underway to ensure the smooth implementation of the project,” Norvaišienė added.
Last year, under contracts with Amber Grid, MT Group undertook some of the most pivotal projects aimed at strengthening Lithuania’s gas infrastructure. The company modernized the Grigiškės, Kėdainiai, and Vievis gas distribution stations, as well as the international reverse metering station in Kiemėnai, which was designed to enhance the reliability of natural gas supply between the Baltic countries. All these works were completed without interrupting gas supply to consumers, ensuring uninterrupted system operation.
MT Group is a leading EPC contractor in critical energy and industrial infrastructure projects across Europe. The company's expertise extends to the development, engineering, and construction of renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture facilities, positioning MT Group at the forefront of sustainable engineering. The company is also a founding partner in one of the largest renewable energy undertakings in the world – Green Energy Park Global, which will produce some of the most cost competitive Green Hydrogen at the gigawatts scale, servicing the decarbonization needs of the hard to abate sectors, including transport and power across Europe and elsewhere around the world.
