The population of roughly 250 Lithuanian wisents (European bison or stumbrai in Lithuanian), descendants of the long-extinct aurochs, either roam and graze vegetation in freedom or chew fodder from make-shift wisent enclosures at several nature preserves, such as those in Pašiliai in the Kėdainiai region in central Lithuania, or at the Žvėrinčius wisent reserve in the Telšiai district in northwestern Lithuania.
