Lithuanian president congratulates Nauseda on election victory

VILNIUS - Lithuania's outgoing President Dalia Grybauskaite telephoned Gitanas Nauseda on Sunday night to congratulate him on his victory in the presidential runoff.

The outgoing leader wished her successor strength and success in fulfilling voters' expectations, Grybauskaite's press office said.  

Accordant to information available to BNS, Grybauskaite plans to meet with Nauseda on Monday. 

The president also telephoned Ingrida Simonyte, Nauseda's challenger in the runoff.

Viktoras Pranckietis, the speaker of the Seimas, also congratulated the newly-elected president. 

"After this night, the country faces a new political phase that, I hope, will bring a fresh impetus and confidence in the future, stability and calm to our people. I wish the new president success and strength in assuming this responsibility and leading the state forward," he said.  

The new president will take office on July 12 after being sworn in an inauguration ceremony. 

With 1,427 of the country's 1,972 polling districts counted, Nauseda had 71.12 percent of the vote against Simonyte's 27.45 percent.
