VILNIUS - After Friedrich Merz narrowly lost the first round of voting on Tuesday to become Germany's next chancellor, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said he believes the process will eventually lead to his appointment.

"I have no doubt that the Christian Democrats won the election, that Mr. Merz is the leading candidate for chancellor and that the vote will end in success," Nauseda told reporters on Tuesday. "We'll have a stable coalition in Germany, a key partner for us."

"I'm already looking forward to meeting the new chancellor to discuss issues that matter greatly to both our countries," he added.

Merz fell six votes short of the required majority in the Bundestag's first-round vote earlier on Tuesday.
