Lithuanian PM reaffirms commitment to stronger ties with Azerbaijan

VILNIUS - Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius has reaffirmed Lithuania's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Azerbaijan.

The statement followed a telephone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Monday, the Government Office reported.

"The partnership between Lithuania and Azerbaijan still has significant room for growth, contributing to the security, economic development and resilience of both nations. We aim for this because we value Azerbaijan as a key partner in the South Caucasus region and advocate for closer ties between the EU and Azerbaijan," the head of government said.

Key areas of partnership identified during the call include energy security, resilience to hybrid threats, transport and connectivity, agriculture and the food industry, as well as cooperation in education and student exchange programmes.

Sinkevicius also highlighted the historic significance of the Washington summit and the initialling of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He expressed Lithuania's support for the peace process and hope for further progress and the normalisation of relations.

The leaders also discussed the security situation in the South Caucasus region and the issue of military actions in Iran.
