VILNIUS - Lithuanian Deputy Foreign Minister Sigitas Mitkus met European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Wednesday to discuss strengthening security and defence and reflecting the resilience of the European Union's eastern border in the European Union's Multiannual Financial Framework.
The Foreign Ministry said Mitkus emphasized during the meeting that European Union competitiveness is closely linked to security and stability.
"Investments and business development are possible where people feel safe. Therefore, the security and resilience needs of eastern border states must be adequately assessed in the EU budget programs for Cohesion, agricultural policy, internal security, and strengthening competitiveness," Mitkus stated.
The meeting also covered Lithuania's priorities for its upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union, European Union enlargement issues, and challenges to European Union competitiveness.
Mitkus also thanked the European Parliament for awarding the European Order for Merit to former President Valdas Adamkus.
The award for services to Europe honors individuals who have made significant contributions to European integration and the promotion of European values. The order was established last year to mark the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration.
