An agent of the Lithuanian secret service, named as Aristidas Tamosaitis, has been detained in Moscow on suspicion of spying, the public relations centre of the Russian security service FSB has told TASS.
"On 19 May, a Lithuanian citizen identified as a foreign intelligence agent was detained in Moscow. He was seized the moment he was receiving secret documents from a Russian citizen," the FSB said.
The detained Lithuanian was taken to the FSB office.
"When confronted with evidence, he testified that he was an officer of the 2nd department of operative services (military intelligence) of the Lithuanian Defence Ministry," the FSB said.
"The necessary investigative measures are being taken," the FSB's public relations office said.
In a further development, a Moscow court ruled today that Tamosaitis would remain in custody until at least 20th July, after a session held behind closed doors, Yulia Skotnikova, a spokesperson for Lefortovo Court told TASS. Tamosaitis is being held in Lefortovo prison in the Russian capital.
