VILNIUS - The Lithuanian government on Wednesday gave the green light for new military infrastructure projects in Kazlu Ruda Municipality and the districts of Svencionys and Kaunas.

The Cabinet updated the list of military infrastructure needed to provide host nation support.

It added special-purpose buildings in Judrarude, a village in Kazlu Ruda Municipality. The Defense Ministry says they are necessary for ensuring the security and training of units stationed at the Kazlu Ruda military training area. The projects cover accommodation and catering for troops as well as storage and maintenance for equipment and weapons.

The list now also includes infrastructure for US troops in Svencionys and Kaunas districts.

In Svencionys District, a multifunctional shooting range will be built near the Pabrade training area, while a 252-hectare site in Kaunas District next to the Rokai training area will be used to improve training conditions for allied and Lithuanian forces.

The government also authorized a change of use for state-owned land managed by the Defense Ministry, allowing it to be designated for national defense purposes.

According to the Defense Ministry, the decisions clear the way for the construction of special-purpose facilities ranging from barracks and dining halls to maintenance depots and other military infrastructure.

The ministry says 4 billion euros worth of military infrastructure is planned nationwide over the next four years.
