VILNIUS – As Lithuania's border guards have recently found an underground tunnel near the Belarusian border, allegedly used for smuggling, Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovic says border guards will look for more of such tunnels.
"When it comes to further action of the State Border Guard Service and the ministry, we have already discussed them, (...) we have assessed the additional risks, and we will certainly check the possible places based on the risk factors where this kind of things could be," the minister told members of the Democrats "For Lithuania" political group in the Seimas on Tuesday, adding that border guards are already taking steps to launch their operations "soon".
The minister did not comment further on the tunnel found in the village of Pasalcis.
The public broadcaster LRT's news website was the first in late January to report on the discovery of the 25-meter-long tunnel found near the border with Belarus.
No further information was provided to the LRT by the SBGS or the prosecution service. According to the website, the area where the tunnel was discovered can only be accessed with a special permit as the village is within the state of emergency area and is protected by border guards.
