VILNIUS - Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas will meet his Polish counterpart Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz in Warsaw on Friday to discuss plans for a military training area in southern Lithuania and the regional security situation.

The talks will also cover the Baltic Defense Line and the East Shield, as well as the NATO and EU agenda, and assistance to Ukraine, Lithuania's Defense Ministry said in a press release.

During the visit, Kaunas is also scheduled to meet Andrzej Grzyb, chairman of Poland's parliamentary National Defense Committee, and to visit the Mesko arms factory, which manufactures the Piorun very short-range air defense system.

"Lithuania and Poland have built a particularly strong partnership in the area of security and defense in recent years as the countries respond to regional threat developments," the ministry said.

The two neighboring countries work closely within NATO and the European Union to reinforce the Alliance's eastern flank, including through joint military exercises and infrastructure projects such as a proposed defense line along the EU border with Russia and Belarus, it said.

Lithuania, Poland, Estonia and Norway are jointly procuring Polish-made Piorun air defense systems.

Polish troops have participated in NATO's Baltic air policing mission since 2006, completing their 13th rotation in the Baltic states in the summer of 2025.
