VILNIUS - Lithuania has submitted an action plan to Taiwan on potential investments, expecting an influx following the opening of the island’s representative office, a senior presidential aide said on Tuesday.

"Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy are working together; a certain action plan has been prepared and proposed to the Taiwanese side. If the Taiwanese side agrees to it, we believe we could host much more from the Taiwanese than we do now," Asta Skaisgiryte told Ziniu Radijas.

An economic breakthrough with Taiwan was anticipated as early as 2021 when the Taiwanese Representative Office was opened in Lithuania. However, Lithuanian officials have recently noted that the island’s investments in the country remain insufficient.

The opening of the office drew a strong reaction from China, leading to a downgrade in diplomatic representation and a contraction in trade between the two sides.

The current Social Democrat-led government has signaled intentions to restore full diplomatic ties with China. However, national leaders acknowledge this would likely require renaming the Taiwanese Representative Office, a move that requires Taipei’s consent.

Skaisgiryte said on Tuesday that the issue of warming relations with China "is one of many issues, and probably not a priority."
