VILNIUS - Lithuania should consider taking part in European military exercises in Greenland as allies begin deploying troops to the Arctic island, Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said on Friday.

"We should definitely consider it. There will be these exercises, then follow-on exercises, and we will be talking about a cycle of drills," Budrys told LRT Radio, saying Lithuania's engagement with allies has never been limited to its own border, the Suwalki Corridor or the Baltic Sea.

"We have a contribution we can offer," he added. "This should be on the agenda if there is a need, of course in consultation with allies and assessing how to do it effectively."

Germany, France, Sweden and Norway announced on Wednesday the deployment of a mission to Greenland, shortly after talks in Washington between US, Danish and Greenlandic officials failed to resolve key disagreements over the island sought by US President Donald Trump.

The White House said on Thursday that the deployment of European troops in Greenland would have no impact on Trump's plans to take control of the strategic Arctic island from Denmark.
