VILNIUS – Transatlantic cooperation is not just a slogan, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys said after a meeting with US Ambassador to NATO Matthew G. Whitaker in Vilnius on Tuesday.
“Our transatlantic cooperation is not a slogan. NATO defense investment pledge is not just spending — both are cornerstone of Allied security,” the Lithuanian top diplomat said in an X post.
He added that during the meeting with the envoy, they had discussed US force presence in Lithuania, the implementation of the Alliance's defense spending commitments, and security guarantees for Ukraine.
Earlier on Tuesday, Whitaker met with Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene.
He said after that meeting that the United States would make no surprise moves when deciding on troop deployments in Lithuania, Europe and worldwide, and added that Washington regularly consulted with allies when reviewing its military presence.
The ambassador is visiting Lithuania as part of a review of US troop deployments in Europe.
Lithuania wants the US to keep the approximately 1,000 troops currently stationed in the country.
